1. [if pfv, often infin with надо, нужно etc]

⇒ to gather one's strength (before doing sth. difficult, after having been ill etc):

- X соберётся с силами{{}}≈ X will summon <muster, regain> his strength;

- X will recharge his batteries;

- X will get his <a> second wind;

- X will rally (and do sth.);

- X will rally his strength <his energy etc>.

     ♦ [Прокурор] сделал новое волевое усилие, чтобы двинуть ногой, но она была неподвижна... Он решил передохнуть, собраться с новыми силами, усыпить бдительность организма (Войнович 4). ...Не [the prosecutor] made another effort of the will to make his leg move, but it remained motionless. ...He decided to catch his breath, summon new strength, and lull the body's vigilance (4a).

     ♦ ...Сам я, живой человек, смотрел на эту сцену откуда-то сбоку и свысока, и я тоже плакал и кричал во весь голос, чтобы они подождали со мною прощаться, потому что, может быть, я соберусь ещё с силами и встану (Терц 2). ...I was still alive and I was looking down at the scene from somewhere on the side, and I cried as well, and shouted at the top of my voice, telling them to wait, because I might still rally and get up (2a).

⇒ to make up one's mind to do sth., overcoming fear, timidity, uncertainty etc:

- X собрался с силами{{}}≈ X summoned <gathered, mustered> his strength (courage);

- X braced himself;

- X took <got> hold of himself;

- [in limited contexts] X pulled himself together.

     ♦ Найман-Ана осталась на месте, присела на корточки, всхлипывая... и так сидела, не поднимая головы. Потом собралась с силами, пошла к сыну, стараясь сохранить спокойствие (Айтматов 2). Naiman-Ana remained where she was and squatted down, sobbing...and not raising her head. Then she gathered her strength and walked over to her son, trying to keep calm (2a).

     ♦ Нужно было дать ответ Гастону Руа... Лансье собрался с силами и сказал: "Хорошо" (Эренбург 1). Не [Lancier] had to give Gaston Roy an answer. ...Lancier pulled himself together and said: "All right" (1a).
